Watercolour 12x16
Bockingford tinted paper

Finished this one today. Been doing charcoal and pencil a lot lately so I thought I would get the paints wet for a change. out of the frame for a few days so I can make any alterations.

Nice job, I like the texture on the beach, perhaps a slightly more interesting sky would improve it, you could always add a couple of small purplish evening clouds.

A very nice watercolour John. Nice accurate drawing in the boat and a nice feeling of recession towards the horizon. That's where the strength and interest of the picture lies.

Like Ken I like the textural treatment of the beach as texture. Trouble is the beach has lost the sense of recession - those two lengths of wood now look as if they're suspended in mid air rather than resting on the shingle.

If you're going to make alterations concentrate on the foreground.

It's a wee bit small so I can't really see much of the detail, but what I can see looks very good to me John th_thumbup.gif

Hi John biggrin.gif ,
Like JMG I don't seem to be able to enlarge the image but as far as I can tell it looks great. Lovely colours and texture.

Hello John,
peaceful scene, well drawn boat th_thumbup.gif . Sky fine as it is but agree with Rob about the beach.

Hi John,

An attractive scene with a beautifully drawn boat. Looks even better when enlarged on Photobucket which worked fine for me.

Took the opportunity to look through your Photobucket Album, John - most impressive!

Best regards,
Pierre

Hi John,
That darned 'Photo Bucket' is playing up with me too.
But from what I can make out by expanding the picture, it seems ok.
I agree with Rob re: foreground.

I was thinking 'wish I could see a larger pic' and then had the brainwave of clicking on your webpage, John.

That painting is just beautiful - I adore the way you have worked the foreground beach, wonderful texture! th_thumbup.gif th_thumbup.gif th_thumbup.gif

PS You have some lovely paintings on your website.

Hello John,
me again.....your painting reminded me of something I had seen somewhere and today whilst tidying up my worktable I came across it. In the Summer edition of ART and Illustrators there is a master class article by Joe Dowden pp 52-3-4-5.
He uses masking fluid to achieve his beach, etc. I don't use masking fluid but you maybe do? Anyway, I thought you might be interested in the article.

It is image 6 on photobucket and asking me to log in to facebook to post a comment. Thought I wouldn't do that without asking your permission first. A well executed painting btw.

Thanks Guys
I have anchored the old runners down now and that looks better, the pic is in an exhibition at the moment. Have had some favourable comments but no sale.
Hey Sarah, I took a look at that article ( mate had the mag still) and that is a very similar technique to mine but with a lot more professional resul, I will have to give it a try next time, Thanks for the heads up.
