A small lighthouse, St Ives . Misty morning, no reflections, The distant sea was shades of grey but changed to the vivid colours nearer the shoreline.

Another winner from you Sarah. I really like the way you have painted the water, very effective. |

Whilst blue fading to grey is OK the transition is a bit to abrupt, and also the sky would be grey as well, so doesn't quite work for me I'm afraid.

Hello Ken, I'm afraid that's the way it looked on that day, the division was very clear cut and made the view very still and peaceful. The blue sky was just beginning to break through so en plein air wins every time as far as I am concerned. Sarah

Nice painting, I particularly like the foreground water.

Love that deep colour in the foreground. Very confident.

Hello Shaz, thank you...seems such a long time ago already since I was there Sarah

Hello LBM, thank you for the vote of confidence!!! I just mixed all three blues in varying strengths and prayed they would work. The turquoise was toned down with a little cobalt. Sarah

The clear strong confidently laid foreground makes it for me Sarah. It's simply stated but somehow the headland isn't. Although a dstant feature softened by mist somehow it's lacks the clean colour of the foreground.

Hello Rob, I agree the headland is on the weak side......it was pale grey and the mist kept rolling along the shore. Next time I will try harder!. Thanks for your comments...much appreciated. Sarah

Sarah - Greys are dificult in watercolour and I've found the best way is not to attempt a mix but to apply a complementary wash - a warm orange/yellow over cobalt blue say. In any case even en plein air I'd be tempted to use a little licence and keep a pale pure colour rather than risk a muddy mix by trying to get a precise match..
