Title: Sunflowers With Teddy

Shaz - November 3, 2009 07:30 PM (GMT)
Still lots more to do on this one, but I'm building it up in layers. The flowerheads are just blobbed in at the moment and I will work on them more plus the rest of course, but I couldn't wait to show it. I am very excited about this one.

Progress shots have been posted on My Blog if you are interested to see how I got to this stage and I will post more after I have something else to show... all takes time. :)

its coming along nicely Shaz, he looks like a very well fed bear B)

LBM - November 4, 2009 09:09 PM (GMT)
Are you working from imagination or a still life setup?

The reason I ask is because the area behind the bear doesn't read true to me yet. I realise that it's not finished. I was just wondering.

BTW - it's looking good.

Shaz - November 4, 2009 10:08 PM (GMT)
Dorothy, thank you - yes I think he's been at the cookie jar!

Andy, thanks your comments are always appreciated. This is a still life set up - I almost always work from life or (if I must) from photos... I need to see what I'm painting.

Still a long way to go yet, but do please let me know what you think or if you see something that isn't working. I am always thankful for any advice or critique.

Hi Sharon, nothing much I cn add to the comment so far. It's all nicely handled and works very well as a piece of domestic genre. Possibly the theme of homely domesticity could be heightened with a few more foreground objects, a rattle, some teething rings, knitted bootees, a hat.

Endless possibilities make the choice difficult. Have I left you with a problem?

Shaz - November 5, 2009 06:30 PM (GMT)
:D No bigger problem than I already faced, Rob. Thanks. Yes, I was kind of thinking along those lines myself... maybe some kiddy's building blocks or something, but I like your suggestions. Would make it kind of nostalgic, wouldn't it?

Anyway, that's given me something more to think about. Thanks for looking and comments, always appreciated as you know.

Sharon

This is looking really good, Sharon. You and sunflowers go well together. Pierre

Shaz - November 6, 2009 07:20 PM (GMT)
Thank you so much, Peter and what a lovely thing to say. :D I adore sunflowers... they are so uplifting, I think it's the colour.

You wouldn't believe the number of sunflowers I have had to buy to keep painting, but it's wonderful to have the all around the studio as I paint. (grins)

Hi Sharon ;)

Painting is coming along nicely thssupp
At 30" x 24" it's quite large too. I like the idea of the teddy.
Looking at him, he looks a lot like one I have had with me for a few years now.
Sat like yours in the painting, he only measures just over 5".
But the best thing about him is....

When you press his belly he farts and says " Ooooh, pardon meeee "., in Frankie Howerds voice.
He gets quite a laugh when people pick him up. :D

   Del you made me laugh so much (not an easy task early in the morning!), thanks for that - my teddy does not do anything as amusing as yours even though he does have beans in his bottom. :P :D

Hope to do some more on this in the next couple of days.

Any more progreess on this Shaz. I'm really liking it so far and took a look at your blog, it's so interesting to see a painting in progress.

Shaz - November 23, 2009 09:34 PM (GMT)
Hi Cherry and thank you for visiting the blog. Unfortunately, I have not had time to paint for a while now as I am busy clearing out my junk - I am hoping to move house in the Spring.

I hope to have time this weekend to tackle this one some more - it is on the easel in my studio and I am itching to work on it! Will post as soon as I have an update.

Shaz - July 11, 2010 07:23 PM (GMT)
Well I finally got around to finishing this one. Sorry my camera has packed up so had to take the photo with my phone... not the best image I'm afraid (too much glare on the right) but you get the idea.

Well worth the wait Sharon.

Love the reflection/shadow of the bear on the vase.

artman - July 12, 2010 01:40 PM (GMT)
Nice job, though the line of the table edge doesn't match each side of th vase. Good sense of depth and three dimensionality in it

Hello Shaz,
I collect teddy bears, all 50 of them have different expressions and I noticed this one of yours has a wary look...did it want to pose? ;)

Agree with LBM...especially like the reflection on the vase.
Sarah :)

robK - July 12, 2010 08:58 PM (GMT)
You've created some nce clean colour harmonies in this painting Sharon which give it its appeal. That slight mismatch of the two edges of the table Ken was on about could be solved by using 'lost and found edges.' That's one of those pat phrases that people trot out leaving everybody wondering what it means.

But it simply means softening an edge until it blends into the background. So if you lost the edge on the left of the pot and then gently brought it into focus on the right the problem would diappear. It's a technique that was made use of by still life painters. Edges vanish into shade quite often.

Thanks so much Andy, Ken, Sarah and Rob.

I'm glad you like the vase Andy and Sarah, it was great fun using glazes.

Will fix that edge - thanks for spotting it Ken and Rob. It's easy to miss obvious things when you get into the zone. ;) Many thanks for the tip on how to right the wrong Rob, much appreciated. thssupp

Sarah, I'm a teddy bear nut too! I have never counted them but I have a fair few. This one is one of my favourites. I think he's worried he'll get the blame for stealing the cookies!

It's so wonderful being back painting again - even though I have missed out on some of the good exhibitions locally, but guess that was meant to be - there's always next year. (grins)

Hi Sharon,

So sorry to have been so long in reply to your post, communication is a bit hit and miss from here (Jacarilla).
What a wonderful result you have achieved (claphands) and I am so glad that you are now able to concentrate on your painting again. If I see any Teddy Bears out here in the wilds of Spain I will take some reference photos for your future paintings!

John ;)

Shaz - July 15, 2010 08:08 PM (GMT)
