There's far more colour there than I expected from the name.

How on earth do you get the white charcoal used in the squirrel?

Surely the term charcoal refers to their consistency rather than the medium used to bind the colour.

BTW. I like Mr. Tufty

Yes I'm wondering how they make white charcoal or any colour other than black for that matter.

You could have fun with that indian chief - adding his war paint would really challenge the medium. He does need a bit of strong colour.

I have been using General's White Charcoal pencil for years and it is more like a pastel.

One of the pastel sticks I use I think it may be the Inscribe black is Charcoal.

Dorothy: Now you have me tempted as they look as though they would work quite well with pastels.

Squirrel Nutkins is particularly appealling.

I replied to these comments, for which I thank you all very much, but for some reason it has not appeared, unless I put it somewhere else in a senior moment

on the box it says that the pencils are made with fine particles of charcoal mixed with the finest clays to give a gentle tint of colour

The only charcoal pencils I have used were black, although I have used pastel pencils but I found them a bit hard. However, they were always very good for detail. I'm sure a combination of pastel and these pencils would be ideal Dorothy. You have certainly got good results with them - that squirrel in particular is just wonderful. thssupp

Thanks Shaz, I'm off to artclass tomorrow going to have a go at A koala in pastel and these pencils they are easier to work with than pastel pencils not so hard :D
