Hi Beatrice
What a lovely little girl, and what an excellent vibrant portrait.
As it is on canvas, I assume you have used oils ? How big is the picture ?
Loved it

I'm not a portrait artist at all, so you must take my comment in that context, but I think that her eyes could do with a highlight to 'lift' them.
I'm deeply envious of your ability to paint people.
Beatrice - February 5, 2008 05:46 PM (GMT)
No LBM no too much highlight on the eyes, she was purposely painted in a soft light and if I had done highlight as suggested it would have mean that the light would have come on her forehead and it did not.
In portraiture, one wrong flick of a paint, highlight or other and you destroy the look of a person.
But point taken.

Super work Beatrice (claphands)
I too am envious of anyone who can do portaits.
You can move mountains in landscapes but one tiny bit out of place in a portait and its as good as a totally different person.
Well done ;)

Thanks a bunch Del and Florence.
Anyone wanting to do portraiture should give it a try and not give up after a few attempts. It is fun. ;)

Very nice Beatrice thssupp Is portraiture any easier in oil than it is in w/c as you can correct any errors made?
Beatrice - February 9, 2008 03:32 PM (GMT)
JMG, I would not contemplate portraiture in watercolour.
Artists must find their own medium of expression for each subject and I am too much of a fuss one.
As already mentionned one wrong movement of the eyes or the lips even the hair style and it destroys the look of the sitter.
So OIL is the only answer to me since that I can correct easily the mistakes.
I admire greatly anyone making a look alike portrait in watercolour !
