Title: Wookey Hole Handmade Paper

quillion - July 7, 2007 01:45 PM (GMT)
I meant to document this last year! with a memory jog here it is.

Sorting out some paintings have come across this one a
Trial of a sheet Wookey Hole Hand Made Somerset Imperial 200lb paper. (Rough)

I cut into 2 and trialled half a sheet to get a feel of the paper.
As it comes water will globule on the paper the paper is very hard sized
Wookey advise wiping with a damp sponge several times leaving 30mins then repeating to remove surface size.

I found even then it benefited from a full soak and stretching,
Used without stretching cockled to much for the way I paint.

A white and interestingly soft surface, which scuffs up into soft balls if scrubbed into but takes a lot of punishment.
Once the technique is found a paper you could love, and for a special painting I think is well worth the sheet price of £7.60

This is on the second half sheet. I think shows the softness possible though the photo does not give a true indication
of the papers whiteness.

An emotional portrait quills that you do so well. I interpret it as sorrowful expectation/anticipation. Perhaps "I dunno what I did wrong to get this?" :(

Interesting feedback on the paper and given your expertise and experience that is of great value to the serious portrait painters.
cheers

I have a pack of their paper that I bought ages ago, but haven't plucked up the courage to use it yet :)

I like this painting, Quills - expertly done.

I haven't got round to trying different papers beyond the standard variety.

Bought some from the works a few years ago and for wet in wet it cockles alarmingly, so well done with this Quills and for being boss of the excellent paper (claphands)

A superb painting with great expression, Quills. Your paintings are inspiring.
I have four lovely granddaughters, the youngest are 4 and 6 years. So far, they paint with me when they visit, I have yet to try to paint them. Perhaps, one day? Pierre

Another beauty from you Quills. Always wondered about this paper but haven't bought any yet, how does rate against Saunders Waterford?

It is not a wash paper in the sense you can easily lay one wash on another like Waterford, but as I am not a wash painter ( that and the colour is why I dislike Waterford ) I found it suited me. <_<

I visited the caves in 2003 and bought some of their paper. I too found it globuled. It was difficult to 'lift' colour too. For people who like a rough surface and not too much wet work - the paper is good. The white is very white. I still have some, but don't expect to use it very often as it doesn't fit the criteria for my kind of painting.
