Autumn snow scene
Colours used: Raw Sienna, Burnt sienna, French Ult Blue, Paynes grey.
Brushes: 45mm Hake x 2, No 10 Rigger (ser 88 Rosemary), No 1 Rigger, Dip pen and masking fluid (feather quill)
Paper Bockingford 140lb (300 gsm) NOT size a4.

Colours used are optional

Part One
Lightly sketch the scene , then mask out all the snow edges against tree bases and hill tops etc, also a few lighter trees trunks and a few fence posts
Mask out the buildings and support pillars on the lower building.

Part 2
Have ready French Ult blue plus Burnt sienna (not mixed together)
Apply a medium strength wash of Raw sienna plus slighty stronger horizontal streaks, now add Burnt sienna streaks, now add a mixture of Burnt siena + F/ult/blue and form more horizontal streaks.
Add trees using a mix of f/ult/blue plus raw sienna whilst paper still semi wet .

Part 3
Apply a very pale wash of raw sienna plus burnt sienna to parts of the snow fields.
Develop the trees using the two riggers and dip pen (to use colour on the pen transfer the paint onto the nib with a brush)
Slightly darker mix for the tree bases.

Part 4
Remove all masking fluid except road edges.
More work to trees and buildings.
Decided the hill was a little high so climbed up and exposed some rock outcrops to help with composition (this is optional)

Added pale blue snow shadows at selected places.

Final Part
Remove masking to roadway edges and and carefully add shadows.
Add extra small rocks and shadows to fields to help with contours.
Suggest ivy on tree trunks by adding a mix of raw sienna plus paynes grey.
Add pale colour to buildings and suggest melted snow on roofs.


This is another restricted palette painting and ripe for conversion.
