A REVIEW OF PEBEO PAINTS

Pebeo watercolour paints come in two grades, there is the standard watercolour and a very high grade fragonard range. I will be reviewing the standard range.

The paints come in 10ml tubes and half pans. The range comes in 28 colours. The tubes are sturdy and the most distinct feature is the top, this is larger than you would normally find on watercolour tubes, its easy to grip and really easy to take off and replace. I paid £1.50p for my tubes and the half pans are £1.10 and this is from the doart shop. ( doart (clickable) ) The price is excellent when you consider that you are getting 10ml in a tube.

Now onto the paint.

I am not sure if these are classed as student grade but to me they behave more like artists grade paint, this is a key point.
The texture of the paint as it comes from the tube is rich and velvety, the pigment is easily released in water and the colours are transparent . I use the paint from the tubes to fill my half pans and once dried the paint is also easily released with water.

I would recommend anyone to try these paints, they are excellent value and are wonderful to work with.

Here is the link for the pebeo web site ( Pebeo(clickable) ), in here you can find out more about pebeo paints and also there is a list of stockists world wide. If you do try these paints, please let me know what you think if them.

I have done a little colour chart with some of my pebeo paints to let you see how they look.

Thanks El for the very clear review and I add my support to your recommendation.

I have used most of those and I have found no problems especially in the use of transparent washes.

The only non pebeo I use in a pebeo demo is W&N Raw Sienna for the glow in the sky.

Excellent value

El thanks very much for the insight into these paints. That sort of experience shown here is valuable to peeps like me. The price is also very competitive compared with the high fliers and worth considering.
Cheers
Jim

Thank you El for such a nice clear review all the info we need. clappyhands
From your colour chart the colours go together very well, no outstanding rogue colours fighting for attention.

12po1u Hi El, firstly I would like to thank you and admin for your generosity in sending out samples of this paint. 12po1u

I received an ultramarine blue and was disappointed with the first attempt with it! The paint was quite bittly, with undesolved particles of pigment. I wanted a vignette effect for a card and here's how it turned out!

I left it a while and added more water and mixed for longer and the result was much better.

Allowing extra time for complete dissolving, (or perhaps it was just an odd tube that wasn't quite right) I'd be quite happy using these paints. The colur is really good! Thank you so much for this, I will definitely be renewing with these paints. I thing they are fantastic value!

Hi Sylvia, I am surprised the paint acted that way. I am pleased you liked them though. cheesygrin

12po1u Hi El, I was surprised too after some of the demo's of paintings using these. I think maybe I got a one off dodgy tube (I suppose it happens?). I could see that it was lumpy as it was coming out of the tube, but I eventually got it right!
Anyway, the are great value for money and I will certainly use them in the future! Thank you again for your wonderful generosity! 12po1u Sylvia

I have had that problem Sylvia with some expensive very nice to use M Graham & Co paints, these are blended with Honey and the very first spot of paint from top of the tube with Raw Sienna had bits as you found.
After that no problem, have no idea why this happens, but seems unrelated to the paint quality, I did wonder if they were tiny honey crystals.

Hi Sylvia. I have a tube here that I bought at the same time as yours. This tube seems fine, I think Quills could be right, it will be just the first little bit out of the tube. Fingers crossed the rest of the tube is ok. cheesygrin
